Yellow Pitcher Plant 5 Fresh Seeds- Unique, Uncommon beauty
One of two main families of pitcher plants, Sarraceniaceae are named because of their conspicuous so-called pitchers, with curling, outward slanting lips and bobbing lids. These intricate plants often grow in profusion in favorable environs, crowding in masses on the edges of ponds, bogs or other bodies of still water. Also known as the Huntsman's Horns or Watches, these plants bloom in late spring. There are seven known varieties of Sarracenia flava, most classified on the basis of small differences in coloration.
The pitcher structures of these plants are yellowish green and cylindrical, can be up to four feet in length and have a hooded top. Often marked with crimson slashes or anthocyanin markings at the base of the hood, these pitchers secrete a nectar that attracts and entraps insects which are then digested by the plant. The purpose of the lids or hoods of the pitchers is debated among botanists. Some think this structure serves to keep rain water out of the pitcher and thus prevents the dilution of the digestive juices.
Sowing
Seed will need to be scattered onto damp soil and then kept cold for 4-6 weeks (placing the pot in a fridge works fine). Make sure the soil stays damp but not waterlogged, if the pot is covered, make sure it isn't covered so tightly air cannot get in. Stretching some transparent plastic film over the spot and using a pin to make a few air holes does the trick nicely. The seed tray then needs to be put somewhere warm and with luck the seeds will germinate.
It is important that the soil is kept wet throughout the growing season. In autumn it can be allowed to dry out a bit as the plant dies back, and when frosty, icy or snowy the Pitcher shouldn't be watered at all
Yellow Pitcher Plants enjoy direct sunlight, and will not do as well in shady areas or north-facing windowsills. Hot summers will not cause problems provided the soil stays wet
