A wonderful collection of evergreen, carpet forming succulents with thick, fleshy leaves that form small or large rosettes depending on the variety. Plants spread by producing little offsets (chicks) that cluster around the parent rosettes (hens). The clustered star-shaped summer flowers are often rosy-red but can also appear in shades of pink, yellow, white or green. Excellent in containers or rock gardens. Winter hardy to zone 5.
Sempervivum means 'always alive' - a reference to the fact that houseleeks tolerate extreme temperatures and drought. The hardiness of Sempervivum , makes them excellent, easy-to-keep garden plants.
Sempervivum is monly grown in containers, but they can thrive in bricks, driftwood and tufa rock, because of their ability to grow in very little compost. South-facing rockeries, gravel gardens and vertical walls also make good habitats.
Houseleeks are most valued for their distinctive rosettes of succulent, spirally patterned foliage, although they also bear attractive flowers from spring to summer. Each rosette is a separate plant, and is monocarpic - it flowers once then dies, but is soon replaced by other new rosettes, called offsets. These offsets can be separated and planted up, and will then grow into new clumps.
Sowing: All Year Round
Sow seeds in peat pots or cell packs, press into soil but do not cover. Needs light to germinate. Kept at 70° F. germination usually occurs within 4-5 weeks. If not, put container inside a zip-lock bag with plenty of air and refrigerate for 2-4 weeks. Then return to 70° F. until germination occurs.
