Lotus (Nelumbo) is one of the most majestic plants to have in a water garden. It is by far the most exotic of all pond plants. And it is the one plant that scares water gardeners. Quite a few people tend to shy away from them, and are intimidated by them. NO NEED! They are very easy to grow once you understand the basic care of them.
The blooming period is usually in late summer in colder climates because Lotus love the heat. They are very fragrant and the perfume will permeate the evening air. Lotus are hardy from zones 5 to 10 and there are some varieties that are hardy to zone 4.

Ideally they like 4 to 10" of water over the pot. Start out at a shallow depth of a couple of inches over the rim of the pan. This shallow depth will be warmer too. As new growth begins to sprout the pan can be gradually lowered to a deeper depth, but no deeper than 10 inches , if need be.
DETAILED SOWING INSTRUCTION
To grow Nelumbo nucifera Sacred Lotus from seed, file down one side of the seed with sand paper until there is a small amount of white color showing and place the seed in water. The Sacred Lotus seed should swell over the next few days and sprout within a week, growing quickly for the next couple of weeks. There are enough nutrients in the Nelumbo nucifera seed to support the plant for 30 days, but it should be planted as soon as practical. Plant in a pot with plenty of room for root growth below and around the seed (at least 4 inches)
Soak the seeds in a small container just covered with water. Change the water carefully several times a day until the seed splits and a long green shoot grows out. They average about 5 days before you see the tiny green sprout start. Then move the new sprouts into bright light
Once the green shoot starts growing it will lengthen very fast. When it is one or two inches long, gently place the sprouted seed in several inches of clay soil at the bottom of a large container like a pail or a plastic gallon milk jug with the top cut off. You can let the little seedling actually grow bigger, but the bigger it gets before planting, the harder it will be to move without damage.
