While there are many excellent tree species for bonsai, the Chinese Elm lands near the top.
Has small evergreen leaves which remain on the tree year-round. They are hardy with excellent branching characteristics. Has a twisted trunk and exposed roots which give the appearance of great age. The Elm family are a group of trees that will forgive you almost anything, will grow in a range of soils and are easy to obtain, with species native to most of the Northern hemispere. Basic Chinese Elm Bonsai Care Light The Chinese elm tree will best grow in full sun but could also give some great result with partial shade. Can be grown indoor, but lack of light will be a problem. Watering The Chinese elm trees will not a lot of water especially in these hot and sunny summer days. A well drained soil will prevent root rot. Feeding and Fertilizer Too much fertilizer, especially high nitrogen ones, will make the leaves of the Chinese elm grow bigger. Avoid over fertilizing by fertilizing a few times in the summer with low content fertilizer. Chinese Elm Bonsai Techniques The shaping of the Chinese elm is mostly achieve pruning and letting it grow. This is the clip and grow method. The fragile bark will often be damaged if you try to wire the tree.
