Boston Ivy - 20 Viable Seed s
The is generally described as a perennial vine. This is not native to the U.S. ( United States ) and has its most active growth period in the spring and summer . The greatest bloom is usually observed in the early summer, with fruit and seed production starting in the summer and continuing until fall. In spring, the new leaves of Boston Ivy are reddish. The leaves typically turn green in summer, before reverting to a reddish color in fall. Boston ivy plants produce inconspicuous flowers, yielding to clusters of dark blue berries. Vine length of mature plants may reach 50 feet or more. Boston Ivy attaches itself to surfaces by twining and small tendrils. These tendrils can hold against any rough surface
Hardy to USDA zone 5 it will quickly cover a wall in almost any exposure.
It does not appreciate a full hot sun but does much better in a slightly more protected and part shade location. Boston ivy can be propagated from seed but tender tip cuttings root easily in the spring (in a glass of water in the home garden) and as many as the gardener desires can easily and quickly be rooted.
Growing Boston Ivy Choose a planting location for Boston ivy that receives six to eight hours of direct sunlight each day. Spread a 1-inch layer of sphagnum peat moss over the planting site and use a garden tiller to incorporate the peat moss into the soil prior to planting.
Use a shovel to dig a hole in the soil of equal depth and twice as wide as the root ball of Boston ivy. Insert the roots into the hole and cover with soil. Water thoroughly to bring moisture into contact with the roots. Space Boston ivy plants 10 to 12 inches apart.
Water Boston ivy once each week throughout the year. Increase the frequency of watering to once every five days during periods of extreme heat and drought. Never allow the soil to dry out completely, or the plant will quickly begin to wilt.
Feed Boston ivy once each year using a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to gradually release nutrients into the soil throughout the growing season. Follow the manufacturer's directions for proper application and dosage information.
Prune once each year during early spring before new growth begins. Use pruning shears to cut back all excessively long vines and vines that have grown out-of-bounds to increase aesthetic appeal and maintain a controlled growth habit.
