From compact tufts of narrow, stiff evergreen leaves come bright globular clover-like flower heads in spring and early summer. Sturdy and dependable, they are perfect plants for edging borders or walks and they are terrific in containers. Evergreen, attracts butterflies . Height: 18-24 inches Width: 12-15 inches
Sowing/Growing
Soak seeds for 6 hours in warm water prior to sowing. Then sow in cell packs or flats, press into soil and lightly cover. Kept at 70° F., germination averages 25 days. Transplant into the garden 12-18 inches apart.
Comments: Full sun, tolerates drought, heat, salt, and poor sandy soil. Native to northern hemishphere coastal regions, Armeria thrives in seaside landscapes. Has evolved to survive with few nutrients and little moisture. Do not amend soil with organic material, do not fertilize, will tolerate regular water with good drainage. Shearing old flowers extends season of bloom. Plants can be rejuvinated by division in spring if bare centers appear. Attracts butterflies. One of the toughest, easiest to grow perennials.
